Candy Canes gone wrong

This Monday's FHE activity has got to be one of my favorites of all time. It was Brittany, Malone, Garth, Laura, and I and we attempted to make Candy Canes. Pertinent background info that is needed to be known is that my family actually did this with our cousins Dean and Lisa Hunsaker and their family one Christmas long, long ago (like when Yegor, our exchange student, was with us in 2004). It was tons of fun and a great success! So in honor of the soon to be holiday season, Brittany got the recipe from mom and we tried it out. Well as you will be able to see with the pictures, it didn't really work.

With candy canes you have to continually pull the taffy until it turns white (except when you put red dye in). However, our taffy had a mind of its own and kept setting up super speedy like so that we couldn't pull it anymore without needing to stick it in the oven to heat it up again. That however only made it really hot so we mainly ended up playing hot potatoe more than pulling it. But after you have "pulled it to glorious whiteness" you are to roll it into a ball and roll your red taffy into a snake until you feel like you're making balloon animals more than candy canes. With your snake you're supposed to rap it around your glorious white ball and then pull both length wise while twisting until you can form a CANDY CANE.

Once again as you can see in the pictures it didn't work out that way. We ended up with a colorblind hot dog more than a candy cane. So after that we finally just gave up and smashed it to smithereens. So instead of making candy canes for FHE we made rock candy!!! =D Candy Cane taffy
